THEJOYE x DESIGNER TRAVEL: GAIL ELLIOTT'S BALI

THEJOYE x DESIGNER TRAVEL: GAIL ELLIOTT'S BALI

Gail Elliott is one of the original supermodels. She calls Cindy Crawford, Helena Christensen (she introduced Gail to her husband) and Yasmin Le Bon friends. They were also her bridesmaids.

Moving effortless from the runway into the world of fashion designing, it was no surprise when Gail launched her own label, Little Joe Woman over a decade ago. Like any small, boutique business she has had her highs and lows, but right now things are going great and just recently Gail packed up her life in Sydney for the eternal summers of Bali.

Her new Bali boutique in Seminyak is grand, elegant and a place to spend hours shopping when you’re on holidays. Little Joe Woman is still available locally too, at The Intersection Paddington in her flagship store and at selected Myer stores, plus online at littlejoeny.com.

Here’s her insider guide to discovering the best that Bali has to offer.

Gail’s Bali.

What is it about Bali that allures you?
For me it’s rugged and luxurious at the same time and is immersed in a fascinating culture.

Tell us about your first trip to Bali…
I’ve been visiting Bali since we moved from New York to Sydney about ten years ago. It was my husband Joe Coffey, who introduced me to this beautiful island. Every trip is special and I love Bali for the people, the culture, the kindness, the smiles, the sense of community, the climate, the food, the produce, the warm air, the beautiful scenery of the rice paddies and the freedom that permeates the air.

Now that you’re a Bali local, where do you spend most of your time?
We have just opened a Little Joe Woman by Gail Elliott boutique on Jalan Petitenget in Seminyak. We love spending time in this area because of the vibrant mix of shopping, restaurants, bars and hotels. One of our favourite restaurants is called Bambu, which is next door to our boutique. We also love Petitenget Restaurant and La Louchiola for their great menus and wine lists, as well as great service. They have become our local places to relax. We also like Watercress Restaurant, Trattoria and Le Pirate and Milk & Madu.

What’s been your best Bali experience?
I’ve had many wonderful experiences but one of my favourites was a trip to an incredible hotel called Niawatu on the island of Sumba.

What’s still on your to-do list?
When I find the time, I’d love to take a raw cooking class course in Ubud.

What made you decide to move Little Joe Woman (and yourself!) to Bali?
We decided to move ourselves and operation to Bali for at least a few years as it’s the epicentre of Asia and we wanted the take the opportunity to show our brand here.

How is life different in Bali to Sydney?
The most challenging aspects of living and working in Bali is adjusting from city life to island life. Concepts of time, schedules, deadlines and urgency are all much less important. But life here is beautiful and once you get used to the slower pace, you learn to deal with it. I am also travelling far more since living in Bali than I had when living in Sydney so I get to experience a little of both worlds.

Tell us something most people wouldn’t know about Bali?
Most people are under the impression clothing in general and the quality of clothing is very cheap in Bali but that has changed considerably. There are fashion brands here that design, produce and sell beautiful, on-trend pieces that you will enjoy wearing whilst on holiday and will also be proud to wear at home.

Favourite Indonesian dish?
Gado Gado, which is a salad of vegetables, tofu, boiled egg and peanut sauce.

Don’t leave Bali without…
Having sunset drinks at Ku De Ta, a bar on the beach which is pretty magical!

Where is the best place to find hidden treasures in Bali?
I love Souq which is a home and clothing store and café in one. They carry a mix of interesting eclectic pieces from around the world. I also recommend Carga for their beautiful gifts and homewares.

What are five must-pack items for a Bali holiday?
Lisa Marie Fernandez bikini, Ultraceuticals sunscreen, Little Joe Woman ‘Rocks, Dust & Gold’ leopard print silk slip dress, wide brim straw Panama hat and Gianvito Rossi flat sandals.
